Hydro-Stop & United Coatings sites achieve ISO Certifications

Quest Construction Products LLC, a division of Quest Specialty Chemicals, is proud to announce that all QCP manufacturing sites have been certified to both the ISO 9001:2008 Quality and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental standards.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the largest and most recognized organization in the world that develops global standards for business. Auditors examined work processes, quality management and control systems, as well as environmental impact procedures. After a nine month process and multiple site audits, Perry Smith, Charleston Plant Superintendent, is happy to display the ISO certification documents in the front lobby. "Achieving the ISO certifications validates our ongoing emphasis on manufacturing high quality products while ensuring that our environmental impact is continually reduced. We are proud of our newest certifications and will strive to set the industry benchmark in these areas as well as in safety and sales.”

QCP has two manufacturing facilities – one in Charleston, SC and one in Phoenix, AZ. From these two sites, QCP manufactures products under the Hydro-Stop, United Coatings, and StreetBond brand names.

Reason #160 to Install a "Cool Roof"

(complete article found at nwi.com) HAMMOND, IN | "Extremely hot, but bearable, is how Bob Pabst described the feeling of working Tuesday on the roof of Hammond High School.

Pabst, general foreman for Korellis Roofing in Hammond, said roofers started working at 5 a.m. Tuesday in an attempt to beat the heat. As the temperature approached 90 degrees about 11 a.m., he said his workday would end soon before the temperature peaked in early afternoon.

...Pabst said Tuesday was a scorcher, but it could be worse with more heat and humidity and no breeze. Last summer, he said he had a thermometer that showed the temperature was 160 degrees while working on a roofing project. Part of the reason was because of a rubber roofing system being installed, which helps absorb heat and creates sweltering conditions for workers."

Hydro-Stop's PremiumCoat Roof System is a "Cool Roof". After the final FinishCoats have been applied, PremiumCoat (white) reflects 79% of the solar energy it receives (and emits 90% of the solar energy/heat it absorbs!), resulting in a roof surface that is usually only 5-10 degrees above ambient temperatures... reason #160 to choose a "Cool Roof" system.

Cool Roofs: An Easy Upgrade

Published on DOE (Dept of Energy) Blog - by Cathy Zoi (the Acting Under Secretary of the Department of Energy)

Check out Google Earth – the ‘view from above’ of your favorite American city. And look at the roofs of the office buildings, warehouses, shopping centers, and even the homes. Most of them are probably pretty dark in color – and this means they heat up a lot when the weather is warm – up to 50 degrees hotter than light roofs. All of those dark roofs mean that as a nation we’re using a lot more air conditioning than we need to. At least a billion dollars a year in extra power bills, in fact. And when you combine hot roofs with dark roads and parking lots, we get the ‘urban heat island’ effect: cities tend to be 2-5 degrees hotter than less urban areas just because of all the dark surfaces.

The cleanest source of energy is the energy you don’t use. We’ve realized that in the Federal government and have gotten started on making sensible changes to save the taxpayers money. We’re looking forward to businesses and householders joining us in saving money by saving energy – and then let’s all shout about it from the rooftops. Cool ones, that is.  (click PDF to read entire blog entry)

Restoring a Standing-Seam Roof - by Steve Thompson
Properly maintained, this elastomeric coating can protect a metal roof indefinitely.

Back in 2009, my remodeling company took on the renovation of a 105-year-old three-story brick structure, vacant for the past 10 years, here in Louisville, Ky. The job included an extensive interior gut and energy rehab along with a new, one-story addition at the back. The original standing-seam terne metal roof (terne is a lead/tin alloy) was intact but in need of attention. We wanted to both restore the original roof and match its appearance on the roof of the addition. As with most remodeling jobs, the budget was a driving concern. But we also wanted to make an example of this home, to show how builders can conserve existing materials when possible.

The PremiumCoat System (FoundationCoat, Fabric, FoundationCoat, FinishCoat, FinishCoat) will then be applied to provide a seamless, sustainable roof system that will never have to be torn off.

Philadelphia Adopts Cool Roof Law

May 20, 2010 - Builder Magazine - Philadelphia Adopts Cool-Roof Law

Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter signed a law mandating energy-efficient reflective roofs or green roofs on all new commercial and residential buildings with no or low slopes.

"...cool roofs reflect the sun's rays... and release absorbed heat.  This, in turn, keeps buildings cooler and lessens the demand for air conditioning by 10% to 30%."

A bit of reflection may curb warming

David A. Fahrenthold - Washington Post
Making roofs white “changes the reflectivity … of the Earth, so the sunlight comes in, it’s reflected back into space,” Chu said. “This is something very simple that we can do immediately,” he said later.
